“Suzumiya Haruhi no Kyogaku” (The dismay of Haruhi Suzumiya), the latest two-part volume of the best-selling light novel series, will be released as an e-book on July 21, Kadokawa Contents Gate Co. said.
It will be sold through the publisher’s e-book distribution service, Book Walker, the company said.
The series, released on Kadokawa’s Sneaker Bunko label, has about 16.5 million copies in print worldwide, with new limited editions released May 25, followed by regular editions on June 15.
The two books grabbed attention early on with a record-breaking first-edition print run of 513,000 copies each.
Kadokawa Contents Gate is the digital publishing arm of Kadokawa Group Holdings Inc., while Book Walker sells e-books from nine Kadokawa group companies.
The digital version of “Suzumiya Haruhi no Kyogaku” will be released in two parts, as was the original book. But each “Book Walker special edition” e-book comes with extra illustrations.
According to Kadokawa Contents Gate, the e-book editions of the “Suzumiya Haruhi” series have been Book Walker’s top-selling light novel titles.
In addition, “Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu” (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya), the first in the series, was an immense success.
Prices and other detailed information for the e-book will be announced later.
Industry insiders are keeping a keen eye on Kadokawa Contents Gate and the Kadokawa group’s ambitious efforts to establish a digital distribution platform for its group companies. Kadokawa Contents Gate appears to be focusing on light novel and manga titles, in which the company is strong, as a main growth driver for its e-book service.
