Chara Hobby 2011, the annual summer trade show dedicated to character goods and hobby items, returns Aug. 27-28 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture.
The massive event introduces the latest Japanese manga and anime characters and hobby items on the pop-culture scene.
Booths from companies producing anime and other video software, video games and even light novels aimed at teenagers will be in abundance. There will also be various stage performances.
A highlight of the event is the Chara Hobby Market, which involves an exhibition and sale of custom garage-kit models made by amateur modelers.
Some company booths will offer stage shows and mini events, in addition to selling special items in advance of their mass-market release or for a limited time only.
Another must-see attraction this year will be the booth jointly operated by two leading monthly hobby magazines, Dengeki Hobby Magazine and Hobby Japan.
Other attractions will include the GK Figure Zone, which is a sale and exhibition space for garage-kit models by professional modelers, an illustration contest for children and a cosplay event for beginners.
A new addition to the show this year is the Card Game Festa 2011 on Aug. 27. This event will include a talk, exhibition and various tournaments of card games that are gaining popularity.
Tickets for adults are 1,300 yen ($16) in advance and 1,500 yen per day at the door. Two-day advance tickets for adults are 2,200 yen.
