Yahoo Japan offers free software to buy manga for iPhones

Translated by The Asahi Shimbun from the website of Anime Anime Japan Ltd.

Yahoo Japan Corp. has started offering free software that enables iPhone users to buy electronic manga from “Yahoo! Comic.”

The offer, which started March 9, followed a similar move for iPad users.

“Yahoo! Comic” has a lineup of about 30,000 titles for PC users. At least 12,000 of the titles are available on the iPhone or iPad, including “Doraemon: Nobita and the Steel Troops,” “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” “Baki the Grappler” and “Mobile Suit Gundam 00.”

Yahoo Japan plans to increase the number of titles available to iPhone or iPad users.

Yahoo Japan also introduced an electronic watermark to protect copyrights of manga available on iPhones.

The watermark, jointly developed with Monic Corp., records information of electronic manga purchases. If a manga is used illegally, Yahoo Japan can easily identify the purchaser, the company said.

Yahoo Japan plans to spread the use of the electronic watermark to other products sold online.
