“Chu-Gakusei,” an amateur CG animated short that last year became the top favorite of fans on the Nico Nico Douga video-sharing site, will soon be a DVD from Kadokawa Group Publishing Co.
The anime was written, directed and edited by Seiichiro Shimizu (who uses the name MIKE), as a project for his master’s degree at the Graduate School of Shizuoka University of Art and Culture.
The short was first uploaded on Nico Nico Douga in March 2009. In September that year, the site asked viewers to vote on their favorite videos, and “Chu-Gakusei” ranked No. 1. Its popularity soon began to soar.
The anime went on to win awards, including a prize at the 21st CG Anime Contest and an excellence prize at the 15th Student CG Contest.
In January 2010, a complete version of “Chu-Gakusei” was uploaded to Nico Nico Douga, winning the top ranking.
The next March, a 5-minute version won the Nico Nico Taisho award and the User’s award at the 13th New International Nico Nico Film Festival. Later that year, the complete version made it to the finals of the Douga Award 2010.
The critically acclaimed anime’s much-awaited DVD will be called “Chu-Gakusei: Super Deluxe.”
The story takes place in a far away planet, called “Chu-Gakusei,” where everything is in monochrome. The story follows Tanaka Sato, a junior high school teacher. All his students share the same name of Hiroshi Abe. Both the teacher and students wear a white, skin-tight garment that covers the entire body, including hands, feet and face.
A new character, Black Teacher, is introduced and reveals the existence of the Kuro Chu-Gakusei, an all-black version of the planet.
The new character of Black Teacher is voiced by professional wrestler Masahiro Chono.
Priced at 1,500 yen ($18.25), the DVD comes out on May 20.
