400 Tezuka manga titles available via iPad app

Translated by The Asahi Shimbun from the website of Anime Anime Japan Ltd.

The Tezuka Osamu Magazine Club, which boasts 400 digital volumes of comic books by the “godfather of manga” Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989), is now available to iPad viewers.

Soba Project Inc. is providing the service for Tezuka Productions Co. The digital library was previously released for personal computer download.

Readers access a wide collection of Tezuka’s manga titles through an iPad app developed by Soba Project for Apple Inc.’s tablet computer.

Tezuka Productions is making early efforts to provide Tezuka manga in digital format, including the iPad world.

Tezuka Osamu Magazine Club offers both free and paid services that allow users to read digital versions of Tezuka’s manga. His works continue to influence Japanese manga today.

The free service offers the latest 100-page edition of Weekly Tezuka Osamu Magazine, which contains episodes from “Astro Boy,” “Black Jack” and other titles.

The fee-based service offers registered members unlimited access to the Tezuka Osamu Manga Zenshu (Complete works of Osamu Tezuka) library for a monthly charge of 1,050 yen ($13), including tax. It contains about 400 titles penned by Tezuka.

As an added bonus, “Dororo,” “Black Jack” and other titles will be released in “motion manga” e-book versions that incorporate voice acting and animation effects.
