Due to overwhelming response to the upcoming “Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn: Episode 3–The Ghost of Laplace” Blu-ray and DVD release, Bandai Visual Co. has been forced to delay sales by about three weeks to April 7.
The company is looking to secure a Blu-ray disc production line large enough to handle all the orders.
The original release date was March 18.
The first episode of “Gundam Unicorn” sold a whopping 110,000 copies when it first came out on Blu-ray and DVD in March last year, Bandai Visual said.
The second episode, released in November 2010, surpassed sales of the previous disc and saw a substantial jump in Blu-ray sales.
Typically, sales of animation series packages tend to slow when second and subsequent volumes are released. But “Gundam Unicorn” sales are growing, proving the market strength of the Gundam brand.
In particular, Blu-ray sales continue to rise, apparently leading to the difficulty in securing enough production of Blu-ray discs.
The delay also seems to be aimed at avoiding a dearth of product during the initial release phase, which could lead to losses in sales.
However, Bandai Visual will hold the special premiere for “Episode 3” as scheduled. The film will be screened at 10 theaters across Japan for two weeks from March 5 to 18. No changes are made in the announced plan to sell limited-edition Blu-ray versions at the theaters during that period.
The pay-streaming service for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable (PSP) game systems will be also available through the PlayStation Store on March 5 as initially planned.
The Blu-ray and DVD release delay seems to have added to the cachet of the theatrical premiere and the advance streaming events.
