This fall, a cute sea creature will “invade” a Tokyo area university’s student festival–ahead of a special DVD and BluRay release.
“Shinryaku! Ika-musume” (Invasion!: Squid girl), an animated TV series, will be featured at Waseda University’s Wasedasai annual student festival at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 7, the second day of the two-day festival.
The anime event, organized by a student group that is dedicated to animation and voice acting, will also include appearances by guests Hisako Kanemoto, who voices the Ika-musume character, and Kanae Ito, who plays Sanae Nagatsuki in the series.
In addition, musical duo Ultra-Prism will perform the series’ opening song, “Shinryaku no Susume” (an encouragement of invasion).
Tickets for reserved seats are 1,000 yen ($12) per person. More information about the event is on the student group’s website at (http://wasedaika.web.fc2.com/index.html).
The “Shinryaku! Ika-musume” anime series is based on the manga of the same name by Masahiro Anbe, which has been running in Akita Publishing Co.’s weekly Shonen Champion comic magazine since 2007. TV Tokyo Corp. and its affiliates began airing the series in October, and its popularity is growing.
A comedy with an eco-conscious theme, the story is of Ika-musume, a “squid girl” who invades Shonan beach to conquer the human race in revenge for the havoc they have wreaked on the ocean.
But even as she tries to control the humans, she finds herself forced to serve them.
Ika-musume is a “moe” character with an endearing quality that her mostly male fans find intensely attractive.
She wears what appears to be a squid-shaped cap, and her light blue hair resembles a set of tentacles that toss about her freely. She also squirts squid ink.
The news that Tsutomu Mizushima, known recently for directing such smash hits as “xxxHolic” and “Okiku Furikabutte” (Big windup), would take the helm for the series also attracted attention.
“Ika-musume” will be released on Blu-ray and DVD as early as Dec. 24. The Blu-ray version will cost 7,140 yen ($88) and the DVD 6,090 yen ($75), both including tax.
Each version includes the first two episodes of the series, running a total of about 50 minutes.
The Blu-ray disc also comes with a special gift pack that includes a pin, for a limited time only.
Both versions include an “invasion” leaflet, in addition to special video and sound extras.
