Captain America tries out the Kewpie look

Translated by The Asahi Shimbun from the website of Anime Anime Japan Ltd.

The comic superheroes Captain America, Thor and Iron Man are being reborn as super-cute Kewpie characters to coincide with the release of the film “Captain America: The First Avenger” in Japan.

A new website, “Special Comic Gekijo” (special comic theater), from Run’A Co. offers four short online comics presenting the Marvel Comics heroes in Kewpie doll form.

One storyline has Captain America, Thor and Iron Man gathering at a bar to have a heated discussion about being superheroes.

The Captain America-themed Kewpie characters are part of the Kewsion series, which features famous anime and movie characters in the style of Rose O’Neill’s Kewpie illustrations.

Since 2007, novelty company Run’A has been producing the cellphone strap mascot dolls featuring Kewpie dressed up as characters from the Muppets, Evangelion and Ultra Man series among other popular franchises.

The Hollywood film “Captain America: The First Avenger,” in which the three superheroes appear, will hit cinemas in Japan in 2012.
