Sketches and original illustrations from the Oscar-winning “La Maison en Petits Cubes” (The House of Small Cubes) and other works by famed animator Kunio Kato are on display at the Towada Art Center in Towada, Aomori Prefecture, until Jan. 9.
Focusing on Kato’s creative approach to animation, the exhibition will eventually tour three additional cities in Japan.
After graduating from Tama Art University’s Department of Graphic Design, Kato joined a group of artists at production company Robot Communications Inc. to produce his works.
A multiple award winner at home and abroad, Kato is also actively working on TV commercials.
The Towada exhibition features a screening of “La Maison en Petits Cubes,” which won an Academy Award in 2009 for Best Animated Short Film, in addition to sketches and background artwork used for the short.
Illustrations for Kato’s “Atogaki” (Afterword), which is currently running in Hakusensha Inc.’s monthly MOE magazine, are also on display.
Another highlight of the exhibition is a screening of his new animated short, “Jokei” (Scenes), which was specifically produced for the occasion.
Kato will visit the Towada venue on Oct. 16 to conduct an anime workshop. On Dec. 11, he will join a program to talk about his work. A special concert is also planned on the same day.
After Towada, the exhibition will travel to Hachioji Yume Art Museum in western Tokyo from Feb. 10 to March 25. It will also be held at Kariya City Art Museum in Aichi Prefecture from April 21 to June 3, and at Nagashima Museum in Kagoshima from July 21 to Sept. 17.
