Nerima Anime Carnival kicks off Nov. 20-21

Translated by The Asahi Shimbun from the website of Anime Anime Japan Ltd.

The Nerima Anime Carnival 2010 runs Nov. 20-21 at Toshimaen amusement park and nearby locations in Tokyo’s Nerima Ward, a major hub for anime studios in Japan.

Focusing on anime produced by companies based in the ward, the festival will offer lots of fun for fans of all ages.

Programs include anime screenings, stage performances and anime song concerts, in addition to an awards presentation and workshops on animation production.

And the price is right: the two-day event costs only the 200 yen ($2.50) admission price of Toshimaen. Once inside the park, all the programs are free.

Certain to thrill the kids is the series of live stage shows starring popular anime characters from Toei Animation Co., the nation’s leading anime studio.

On Nov. 20, “HeartCatch Precure!” costumed characters will take to the stage, followed the next day by “Dragon Ball Kai” characters.

Three programs of anime screenings are on the bill, starting with a showcase of animated films for children from around the world presented by Kinder Film Tokyo, a private organization that collects children’s films.

For adults, a special program of classic animated TV shows is scheduled, including the boxing anime series “Tomorrow’s Joe” and “Sally the Witch,” a series about a girl with magical talents.

In the third program, Nerima Ward office and the city of Annecy in France will jointly present screenings of award-winning animated works from Annecy International Animated Film Festival. The two cities have formed a trade partnership to promote animation.

In addition, The Anison Live Stage concert on Nov. 20 will feature Shuhei Kita and Himeka, winners of a nationwide anime song competition who have since launched singing careers.

On Nov. 21, a concert by Yoko Maekawa, best known for her renditions of songs for the puppet theater TV series “Hyokkori Hyotanjima,” as well as the “Cutie Honey” and “Megu the Little Witch” animated TV series, will take place.

To promote the animation industry in Nerima Ward, a preview of an animated short produced by the Nerima Animation Association will be shown. It won the third annual Nerima anime creators award. In addition, the winner of the fourth annual award will also be honored.
