Kyoto tram features comic protagonists’ images

Translated by The Asahi Shimbun from the website of Anime Anime Japan Ltd.

Eizan Electric Railway Co. (Eiden), a local railway company that operates two lines cutting through Kyoto, started operating special trains featuring the main characters of “K-On!” on Sept. 1, the company said.

There are two types of train cars. One features the five main characters from the anime series–Yui Hirasawa, Mio Akiyama, Ritsu Tainaka, Tsumugi Kotobuki and Azusa Nakano–in the center, along with the bandmates. The other shows Yui Hirasawa at the two entrances.

The illustrations are based on a feature film adaptation of the anime, which will be released on Dec. 3.

Eiden will operate the “K-On!” trains until late December.

The special offer looks certain to attract much local attention, with the anime produced by Kyoto-based studio Kyoto Animation Co.

For the anime’s legions of fans, Eiden will also provide up-to-the-minute information on the location of the trains using a real-time positioning system installed on the trains.

The trains will be indicated in real time on Google Maps. Fans can also track their positions on personal computers and smartphones.
